Hi!

The tensionwheel for the timingbelt broke and the timingbelt came loose !! Resulting in engine without much power, I did managed to get it home.

But after replacing the tensionwheel, the engine will not start. I did reset the timingmarks.. but no luck! so perhaps the pistons have damaged the cylinderhead or the valves.

So can anyone tell me if there is room enough inside the cylinder, between the piston and the valves, so that the valve won’t bend?? Or do I have to get new valves fitted??

there is not enough place. in the worst case also the piston would be damaged. if the timing belt two or more teeht are wrong, the piston would crash into the valves.

At first check the compression on all 4 cylinders. It should be about 11bar. all below 9 the engine has to be repaired or changed.

Yes... I was afraid of that!!!

Well nothings for it then… just hoping that it will not mean a new engine

if the cylinderhead or the valves are destroyed and the Pistons are good, it would be the simplest thing to get an cylinderhead from an Golf 2 GTI PF or PB or an golf 1 cab with the 2H engine. the cylinderheads of this engines are all the same. i dont know, how the law is in denmark, but it would be also simple to built one of those engines in your country. they are all the same. the power difference is mostly effected by the different enginecontrollers. so if you can get a well 2H, PF or PB engine, i would prefer to mount this in your car. because the crankshaft bearings may be destroyed if the pistons worked again the valves.

if you got home with the loosen timing belt, the engine shouldn't be damaged seriously. Did you also controll the position of the driveshaft of the ignition-distributor ? And what about the compression-values ?
